Google Ads for Tourism Businesses in the Canary Islands: How to Stop Burning Your Budget

Why Google Ads "doesn't work" for most tourism businesses

Every month we talk to owners of car rental companies, apartments and excursion businesses who tried Google Ads, spent a few hundred euros and saw no results at all. They concluded that "Google Ads doesn't work."

It does work. The problem lies elsewhere.

Google Ads is a precision tool - like a scalpel. In the hands of someone without experience, it turns into a machine for burning through budget. In the right hands, it's the most predictable customer acquisition channel in tourism.

The difference comes down to configuration details that most businesses simply skip.

Mistake #1: Targeting the wrong keywords

Imagine you run a car rental company in Los Cristianos and set up a campaign around the keyword "car rental." Your ad shows up for anyone who types those two words - in Warsaw, Berlin, Buenos Aires.

You pay for every click. None of them turn into a booking, because people are just browsing options or looking for something completely different.

The right keywords for your business look like this:

  • "car rental Tenerife July" - specific dates, specific location
  • "rent a car Los Cristianos no deposit" - a specific need
  • "alquiler coche aeropuerto Tenerife Sur" - a customer right on the verge of deciding

These are so-called high-intent keywords. Someone typing this is ready to buy. Not browsing, not comparing for a month - buying right now.

Mistake #2: No negative keywords

This is the other side of the coin. Just as important.

If you run paid campaigns without a negative keyword list, your ad shows up for searches like:

  • "free car rental" - someone with no intention of paying
  • "rentalcars.com reviews" - looking for reviews of that platform, not your business
  • "how to cancel a car booking" - someone with a problem, not a need

Every one of these clicks costs you money and brings nothing in return.

A negative keyword list is one of the first things we set up in every new campaign. For the tourism sector in Tenerife, we typically exclude several hundred phrases from the start.

Mistake #3: A landing page that doesn't convert

You can have a perfectly configured campaign and the right keywords. But if the customer clicks your ad and lands on your homepage with no clear CTA and no way to book online - you're losing money.

The rule is simple: every campaign should point to a dedicated landing page that:

  • answers exactly what the customer searched for on Google
  • has a visible booking form or a "Book now" button
  • loads in under 2 seconds on mobile
  • has no navigation menu pulling attention away

The customer clicked a "car rental Tenerife" ad. They land on a page with an availability calendar, a price and a "Book now" button. They convert. That's the setup that works.

Mistake #4: Ignoring ad scheduling

Tourism in Tenerife follows a very specific booking rhythm. German tourists plan their holidays on Sunday evenings. UK customers mostly book on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Polish travelers often book last minute - Friday, the weekend.

If your ads run around the clock with an even budget, you're burning money during the hours that don't convert.

A well-configured schedule can cut customer acquisition cost by 20-30% without touching the budget at all - just by spending smarter across the day.

Mistake #5: No conversion tracking

This is the most serious mistake of all. If you haven't set up conversion tracking, you don't know:

  • which keywords are actually bringing in bookings
  • which ads work and which are burning your budget
  • how much it costs to acquire one customer
  • what return you're getting on every euro invested

Without this data, you're managing your campaign blind. Google Ads needs data to optimize itself automatically. Without conversions, the algorithm has nothing to learn from and spends your budget at random.

What a proper campaign looks like for a tourism business in the Canaries

Based on the projects we run for local businesses, we've developed a structure that works:

Brand campaign - protects your own company name. If someone searches for your rental company by name, your ad needs to be the first result - not your competitor's.

Local campaign with purchase intent - phrases with location and dates. The most expensive CPC, but the highest conversion rate.

Competitor campaign - you show up when someone searches for Rentalcars.com or Booking.com. Risky, but often very effective.

Remarketing - you reach people again who visited your site but didn't book. Cost is much lower than a cold campaign, and conversion is often higher.

How much budget you need to get started

For a small car rental company or apartment business in Tenerife, a realistic starting budget is €300-500 per month. Below that, it's hard to gather enough data to optimize, and Google's algorithms have nothing to learn from.

With a well-configured campaign and an online booking page, the cost of acquiring one booking typically falls between €15 and €40, depending on the sector and season. With an average booking value of €250-400 - the math speaks for itself.

Should you hire an agency or do it yourself

Honest answer: if you've never run a Google Ads campaign and don't have time to learn, hiring a specialist pays for itself faster than learning from your own mistakes.

Google Ads charges you for every click. Every configuration mistake costs real money from day one.
